I make a poor hipster

To be honest, I’ve never been really into Muse (I know what you’re thinking, “but karen/max, aren’t you into indie rock and don’t you have a minor obsession with all things british?”  very true, but they’ve just always been one of those bands I’ve avoided, like how I didn’t like the White Stripes until their song about the doorbell).  But then the other day I heard Supermassive Blackhole on the radio (for the 20th time) and thought “hey, I like this song. wonder who sings it?” so I googled it and found out it was Muse.  Huh.

Today I picked up the album from the library and listened to it while getting ready for my NYE party tonight (getting ready = putting on my I <3 shooting zombies tshirt and dancing around to Muse).  It’s a darned good album!   there’s genuine rokking and variety of sound and re-listenability here.  true, some of the songs run together a bit (kind of my issue with them in the first place) but all in all, it’s quite enjoyable.

sometimes I miss the good old days of high school when I had nothing to do but listen to music.  someone should pay me to watch movies and read books and listen to music while not expressing any opinion at all except “I liked that one” or “I didn’t like that one.”

back in ohio

My flights home were uneventful, though they were both late.  the first flight was late because a girl wouldn’t come out of the bathroom (”you need to come out and take your seat so we can leave PLEASE” “everybody’ll stare at me!”) and then I just had time in minneapolis to get to my next gate before it started boarding, though then that one was late because they were short on baggage handlers.  found my car, no problem, and drove back to cincy.  I got here at 12:05, was in bed at 12:15, and this morning I’m going to work.

btw, mom’s catholic now and grandpa got a sweet new rain gauge for christmas.

things have changed

so apparently I’ve become a world news junkie.

every day I work I check 3-4 news websites at least once, sometimes twice throughout the day, but I haven’t read the news all week so I’ve had no idea what’s been happening in the world and tonight I get online to waste some time and I see that Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated.

I have a few reactions.  I’m sad, because I knew who she was and cared about what happened to her and the upcoming elections.  and I’m surprised because I knew who she was and cared about her and the upcoming elections.  that’s definitely different.  also, I’m annoyed that I didn’t hear about it sooner (what?  bhutto’s been killed and no one told me?).

excuse me, I have to go spend an hour figuring out what else I’ve missed this week.

Merry Christmas!

same thing we do every night (try and take over the world)

you know one thing that I like about my family?

that reading is a social activity.  I spent two years trying to convince Kayla that reading on the couch was a perfectly acceptable answer to the “what are we going to do tonight” question.  She never believed me, and we’d end up doing something else fun like watching a movie or playing video games or going somewhere and terrorizing our friends.  It was great, don’t get me wrong, but I seriously think that two people reading books on the couch are being perfectly sociable.  I mean, we’re not off in our respective bedrooms or wearing headphones or anything.  Plus you get to finish your book faster.
