ayudame!

seriously.  I work at an after school program for kids and once or twice a week I have to come up with an educational and fun activity.  all by myself.  all the activities I come up with are fun, but hardly educational.  mostly they are art projects.

so, if you can think of any games or activities that can be done in spanish with kids 10-14 years old, I´d appreciate it.

I will ask Maude… I thought of several and then realized they were in no way educational. Oops.

Stella was having a blast at the Y this week playing “freeze dance” with a friend, not educational, but good movement. You play HSM songs and dance like a fool, then someone stops the music and you freeze, woo hoo!

You can play drum tag. You play the beat and they can only move their feet on the rhythm you choose. For instance: half note means they can only move every 2 beats, whole note they have to count to 4 before they can step etc. I bet you can guess that their favorite rhythm is eighth notes! Everybody always wants to go fast. It teaches rhythm and beat. Also kids love board races. It doesn’t matter what they are putting on the board…treble clef notes, vocab words, rhythms. As long as there are teams and it is a race they will love it. You might have to talk about being a good sport though. What about jump rope rhymes? What about jumping rope with times tables? If you use the long rope the person in the middle tries to get as far as they can without tripping while the turners recite the times tables. What about musical SHARES? Good ol’ BSF. What about a-tisket a-tasket–do you remember how to play that game? You can also play hot and cold where one kid hides something when another kid steps out of the room. Then you knock so they come back in and everyone gives a hint where it is by playing or singing loud when they are close to where it is hidden and soft when they are far away. Let me know if you want more of these!
